RADAR / DEVELOPER TOOLS DESK REVIEW

A small window into what an agent actually did.

Tracelet turns an OpenTelemetry stream into a local view of prompts, tools, pauses and errors.

What is it?

Tracelet is a local collector and viewer for traces emitted by AI-agent work. A trace is the record of the steps a program took: a model call, a tool invocation, a delay, or an error.

Why did Radar notice it?

A spinner cannot tell you whether an agent is thinking, waiting on a tool or quietly failing. Tracelet's interesting proposition is modest: make that sequence visible on the developer's own desk before it becomes a production observability project.

The local shape matters. It suggests a quick way to inspect one known run, compare the expected steps with the emitted ones, and then throw the evidence away when the question is answered.

What's the catch?

A viewer can only show what the application emits. The default buffer is described as in memory, and persistence is a separate decision. We have not tested retention, malformed traces, or whether the useful detail survives a restart.

Who might want it?

People building agents who are tired of explaining a mysterious delay from a log line. It is probably too small a tool for a mature production monitoring programme, which is part of its appeal.

Radar verdict

A useful-looking instrument for the moment when an agent run needs explaining, with enough open questions to keep this at desk-review status.

Next step

Send a synthetic trace, restart the collector, and compare default retention with explicit persistence.
